Halsey is currently on her Badlands tour in the U.S. and at her concert Saturday in New Braunfels, Texas, she took a break between songs to comment on recent events.
“For different reasons, in different cities,” she said, “I’ve been having to address fear in my crowds.”
An audience member can be heard screaming “Black Lives Matter!”
Halsey herself is not only biracial, but identifies as bisexual and has bipolar disorder, placing her at the center of social justice issues that have intersected recently.
The singer said she wanted to remind her fans to keep educating each other by sharing their personal experiences and opinions.
“Tell your friend what it’s like to be from your religion, tell your friend what it’s like to be of your race, tell your friend what it’s like to come from your class.”
Halsey then presented an analogy to the crowd:
“Six months ago, I played a tour and every night I played to 1,000 people. But you guys told your friends about me. And now I get to play a tour this summer, altogether, to about, like, 115,000 people….If you shared these opinions and these experiences the way you shared your love for BADLANDS, I can only imagine just how far your ideas could go.”
