Against The Current – In Our Bones
Words by Ally Fisher
When I first listened to Against the Current’s 2015 EP, Gravity, they were arguably the pop rock, female-fronted band that this scene needed to bring some fun as well as fresh diversity to a space full of melancholic and solemn guitar heavy bands. However, with the release of their first full-length, In Our Bones, it was confirmed that Against the Current would be just that band. The album is full of pop-heavy and extremely catchy guitar riffs, which are perfectly paired with lead singer Chrissy Constanza’s deep and edgy vocals.
Single “Runaway” is the all-encompassing song on the album that features excitable and short guitar riffs amongst an overly memorable pop, chorus hook– a perfect piece for the upcoming summer months. Meanwhile, title song “In Our Bones” allows for Constanza’s vocals to radiate on a whole other level as she fluctuates from a soprano back to a mezzo-soprano effortlessly and beautifully against a simple acoustic guitar and synth drums. Though “Runaway” and “In Our Bones” show a more traditional pop rock sound, “Wasteland” features heavy synths and an atmospheric sound reminiscent of Halsey, yet slightly more enticing and engaging as heavy drums compromise the latter half of the song. The album is also foolproof lyrically with its emotional yet highly empowering themes, notably on “Chasing Ghosts” and “Demons,” as Constanza reminisces about past failed relationships and becoming stronger through them.
In Our Bones, overall, is the idyllic combination of pop and rock as the songs are wonderfully manicured and layered with Constanza’s dynamic voice. In general, Against the Current is the female-fronted, pop rock band that not only the scene has needed, but also young female musicians aspiring to make their mark in the industry.
