Staff Picks: Top 5 Albums Of The Summer

0

As the last few weeks of summer come to a sad close, it’s time to look back on some things that make summer, summer. Memories shared with best friends, work horror stories, vacation reminiscing, the inevitable post concert depression, and of course, the albums that either came out or we just simply could not get enough of. So without further delay, here are the top five albums of (my) the summer.

  I the Mighty – Connector

Released in June, Connector was the perfect beginning of summer, post-hardcore hype album. Every song is perfectly produced and polished with an energy that was perfect for those first few weeks of freedom. I especially had on repeat Playing Catch with .22, The Lying Eyes of Miss Erray and Slow Dancing Forever.

R5 – Sometime Last Night

Now you’re probably thinking something along the lines of, “Isn’t that the Disney band? Okay…” But here me out here, while yes, they are very minimally affiliated with Disney, they have proved their stance in the music scene. Last year, went production started for the band’s second LP, they were handed an entire album that was already written, and all that had needed to be done was recording. However, the band turned down the pre-written album and pushed back the release date, simply so they could personally write and record each song on the new album. The determination and maturity the band gained since the release of their first album Louder shows in the lyrics and the incredibly massive sound development of Sometime Last Night. The albumis fun, catchy, and had me dancing around my living room at midnight while I crammed for summer class finals, specifically to “All Night,” “Dark Side” and “Do It Again.”

Catfish and the Bottlemen – The Balcony

Yes, I am aware that this album did not come out this summer, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t listen to it for several weeks straight during the blistering hot months. The Balcony is simply, an extraordinary album and one everyone should listen to at least once. The sound is exactly what you would expect from four 20-year-olds from Wales: gritty and fun. Whenever I listen to The Balcony I am transported to a pub in South London in the company of my best friends as we watch the band in the comfort of our bar stools. Unfortunately, that does not actually happen, but if you want to escape reality for a little, try “Cocoon” or “Sidewinder,” two of my favorites from the album.

Neck Deep – Life’s Not Out To Get You

I had been waiting for this album all summer and let me say, I was not at all disappointed. Life’s Not Out To Get You is pop-punk perfection. The guitars are loud, the drums are heavy, and the lyrics are deep and angsty about living life to the fullest, a perfect combination for these last few weeks of summer. Life’s Not Out To Get You is possibly the best album of the year and it was well worth the wait. If you’re not convinced or are skeptical, check out “Serpent,” “December,” or “Lime St.”

The Cab – Symphony Solider

Again, I know this album came out four years ago but every time I listen to this album I get sucked in. Needless to say, I got sucked back in this summer. Symphony Solider is poppy but with loud guitars. The album is catchy and fun with each song having it’s own individual sound, making it a staple for summer car rides or when you simply need a mid-day pick me up. Songs “Angel with a Shotgun,” “Intoxicated” and “Grow Up and Be Kids” will get you dancing at your desk, kitchen, or car seat.
