Meet Highly Suspect, the bona fide rock group based out of Brooklyn, NY. The groups been busy as of late gearing up for the release of their debut album, Mister Asylum, which is filled with 10 rock tracks filled with aggressive riffs and punk attitude. Recently, singer and guitarist Johnny Stevens opened up to us about the band’s track, “23.”
“I was sitting in my hotel room in Los Angeles last fall at 2am when the main riff for “23” came out. I was just kind of faded and playing my guitar looking out over the city and this feeling came through me. I love to travel places alone and feel especially great about being someone that made it out of the small town grind. The song is basically an anthem of self empowerment and independence. Sometimes you have to just get up and go, make shit happen even when others think you can’t. In “23” I shed the naysayers and welcome the future. I think being out in LA for that period helped give the song it’s springiness. It was already cold in New York so getting some sun really helped the vibe. And on a side note, it’s actually called “23” because when I recorded the first riff in my phone so I could send it to Ryan and Rich it was saved as “voice memo 23” it worked out though because I was “23” years old when I decided to leave the hometown which is lyrically what this song is about. Also Michael Jordan so… Enough said.
