Ah, summer! A time known for going outside and enjoying the sunshine after a long, cold winter. Just kidding because it’s probably going to be hot as hell and your air conditioner will be your best friend. Another place you will spend a lot of time? The movie theatre filled with the highest concentration of big budget films of the year. Some will be amazing, other’s not so much but it doesn’t matter because we already know that Pitch Perfect 2 and Age of Ultron have already locked in the top spots for this year so we’re not going to talk about them. Plus, you’ve probably already seen them at this point.
WARNING: THIS POST WILL CONTAIN ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS.
So I was in my early tweenage years when the first Fantastic Four movie came out and I saw the second as well. However, neither movie really captured my interest like other big superhero movies (Avengers, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy). This time I’m intrigued because I didn’t even know they were making a new Fantastic Four film with all the Avengers hype. On top of that, Miles Teller is Mr. Fantastic and I’m curious if he can play a part that doesn’t make me want to punch him in the face. He’s kind of like Jack Gleeson (who played Joffrey Game of Thrones). He’s a nice normal person in real life, but on screen he plays such a big douche (and I’m being nice there) that all I want to do is punch him in the face for the entire movie. I’m excited to see him play an awkward nerd for once. Break that typecasting, Miles!
Ant-Man – July 17th
I know that Marvel, at this point, could literally put only fives seconds of Stan Lee one-liners on the silver screen and everyone would still pay to see it multiple times. Exhibit A being Guardians of the Galaxy, which no one knew anything about going into it. I’m just a bit more excited for this film since I’ve read the original Avengers comics and I actually known this movie was coming out for more than a week. The fact that I love Paul Rudd as an actor helps. I’m pretty sure that Marvel could make a profit off an awful movie, but they don’t want to, considering how many people still give them crap about Iron Man 2. But seriously, Marvel, don’t ruin this for me.
Papertowns – July 25th
I don’t think anyone expected The Fault in Our Stars to do as well as it did last summer. A movie about kids living with cancer and falling in love, doesn’t exactly fit in with the whole idea that summer block busters have to be so awesome and have an explosion every 10 minutes. Papertowns (the book), has the same depth of The Fault in Our Stars but has a lot more liveliness to it. There are pranks, road trips, mysteries, breaking and entering, and Nat Wolfe from The Naked Brothers Band (remember from that one show on Nickelodeon?). Plus, I’m a huge John Green fan and this was the first book I read by him. On top of all that though, the book included three pages talking about a collection of black Santa’s and it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever read (not the Santa being black part, the conversation about the black Santas).
Please for the love of God, do not hate me for saying this. I’ve never seen any of the Jurassic Park films. I was a huge scaredy-cat growing up and considering my initial reaction to seeing Voldemort in The Sorcerer’s Stone was to hide under my coat and then later run out of theatre crying, so my parents weren’t keen on showing me a film where dinosaur’s eat people. But I’ve grown up into a nerdy girl who is actually really pumped to see this movie. I love action because rom-coms have completely bored me to tears at this point. I think other than the name and the legacy; Chris Pratt is the biggest thing going for this film. He’s always the goofy, sometimes-dimwitted guy (and we love him for it), but everyone wants to know if he can put on a serious face and save the people in the park from this hybrid dinosaur of doom!
Inside Out – June 19th
As someone who was an angsty teen, was at one point the new kid, and spends way to much time trapped inside her own head; this movie has the coolest concept. Plus, it’s Pixar! It’s going to be colorful and fun but still pull at my heartstrings. Also, Amy Poehler is pretty much part of the holy trinity of comedy (all praise be to them). She’s a fantastic writer and actor with phenomenal comedic timing and heart, so I’m actually shocked that this is her first Pixar movie. Plus, they have so many wonderful actors and comedians in this film, we’re bound to get some laughs. If you don’t get excited for Pixar movies, particularly this one, I don’t want to be your friend. You are also probably not that fun at parties.
And finally…
Yes, I like Disney movies and I am a grown woman. I don’t care. This movie’s teaser had me internally drooling over how awesome it is. Disney live-action films may not always be the best but they are gorgeous to look at. Tomorrowland is no exception. The scenes we’ve seen in the trailers and teasers are so visually stunning that they should be shown in an art gallery. You also have George Clooney and Hugh Laurie in the cast, otherwise known as two of the world’s favorite actors. The lead character is a snarky, badass of a teenager, which I can identify with since I am one (Nick, our editor will back me up on this). But the best part? Brad Bird directed it. That’s right. The guy who directed The Incredibles, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and soon The Incredibles 2. HOW ON EARTH COULD THIS MOVIE BE BAD? IT CAN’T! Honestly, they just need to take my money now because if it’s as amazing as I think it’s going to be, I’ll end up seeing it about 4 times.
