Best Coast – California Nights
Review by Annette Hansen
Just in time for those of us daydreaming of those long summer days, Best Coast is back with their laidback, beachy sound. On May 5 the band released their third album California Nights and with their trademark dreamy sound they’ll have us all wishing for sunny skies and warm breezes.
It seems that over the years Best Coast has cultivated a sound that is both relaxing and undeniably infectious. With this new release the band has only continued to refine those characteristics. Opening track “Feeling Okay” features bouncing lead guitars and colorful harmonies while tracks like “Heaven Sent” offers a more punk rock vibe with fast guitars and spunky, repetitive choruses. The high of the album is probably on the song “In My Eyes” with melodic guitars, longing verses and a catchy chorus.
Where California Nights loses some of it sparkle is in its overwhelming sense of sameness. The songs all feature the same hazy tone so it’s not hard for the tracks to get lost in the mix. The album does try to incorporate a few different musical elements including punk riffs and even a few moments of southern twang but some off that gets drowned in the haze.
In the end though, California Nights is a worthy listen and even a worthy purchase. If you take the time to notice all the nuances this album has to offer it’s not hard to tell what’s so great about it. If you’re looking to get into the summer spirit Best Coast’s mellow melodies are the way to go.
