How did you form?

In 2006, we started as a trio, mostly just jamming and improvising. We all had common friends in the Moscow scene. There were no songs, no band name, just music. We all had great chemistry immediately, so decided to turn our occasional jams into band practice.  The name is not the Roman city, but in fact a girls name that we thought sounded pretty. In 2010, Sasha joined as our keyboardist, creating the ‘foursome’ right before our debut Tropical.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

There are so many to mention, and not to sound too cheesy but every moment is a highlight for us. The first big “this is happening” was when we played on national television in Russia. A similarly big moment, but in the US, was when we were driving in Miami and heard our song on the radio…. which was also during our first tour in America, another highlight. Most recent highlight would be recording with David Hartley and Brian Mctear on Real. They are both such pros at their craft, and they really helped the band push into a new frontier sonically.
Why should people listen to you? What makes you different?

We work very hard to capture what we consider the golden era of music, the late 80s and early 90s. The Cure, Phil Collins, Talk Talk, Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music, Tina Turner – they all had this amazing balance between experimentation and pop accessibility. This is the perfect mix to us: music that is interesting and unique, but also can speak to many different people of different ages and backgrounds. So if you enjoy this era of music, you should listen to us.

What makes us different is we are straight forward about this intention, by calling our music Pop and New Wave. Many bands borrow elements from many different eras, but we try to stick to this one we love the most. Also we come from Russian, where not that many bands singing in English with a pop sound like us originate. Or tour in for that matter. Of course Russia has an effect on our music, even though most of our influences are Western.

Keep up with Pompeya on all things social!
