The Technicolors – Ultraviolet Disguise
Words By: Ally Fisher
Ultraviolet Disguise is the newest release from the Phoenix-based indie alternative band, The Technicolors, and it’s an EP that will have you desperately wanting more. The band has a sound that’s evocative of Arctic Monkeys mixed with The Strokes, a combination you do not want to miss.
The five-song masterpiece is one that has been carefully outlined and polished right down to the last breath, guitar riff, and drum hit. Each song has a sound that is reminiscent of the band’s genre influence, the iconic British alternative, but these three Americans make the notorious British sound ten times better. “Tonight You Are Mine” is like an experienced older sibling of the Arctic Monkey’s “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” with it’s hypnotizing and lulling vocals by lead singer Brennan Smiley along with motley guitar riffs throughout.
Album opener, “I’ll Love You Someday” is another hit with a high-energy sound that is similar to The Strokes’ “You Only Live Once.” The last song on Ultraviolet Disguise is ballad, “This Time Around.” The song is soothing with its slow electric guitar riffs as well as its coffee-shop acoustic sound, all topped by Smiley’s emotion-filled, raspy, vocals.
While it’s easy to pinpoint where the band gets it’s fun, underground alternative sound from, that does not make the album any less enjoyable. The Technicolors are the perfect combination of all your favorite British alternative bands, just without the cool accents but trust me, the band’s exceptional talent makes up for it.
Ultraviolet Disguise is only a preview of what’s to come from The Technicolors and I’m eager to hear what comes next. Also be sure to check out The Technicolors on The Maine’s American Candy tour this spring!
