Five Of The Best Covers On YouTube Right Now
Word By: Jen Boylen
Everybody loves to hear their favorite band’s song getting covered. From Taylor Swift to Carly Rae Jepsen, these tributes to such great artists are just as good, if not better than the originals themselves. Here are the top five best current covers of some of music’s hottest tunes.
I Prevail – Blank Space (Taylor Swift)
It seems everyone has been covering Taylor Swift since her newest record, 1989, dropped. As generic as many covers can be, I Prevail was one of the few that stood out. The bands cover of Blank Space, in a pop-goes-punk style, has close to nine million views, and deserves every single of one them.
Knots – I Really Like You (Carly Rae Jepson)
Knots is new to the Youtube scene. One half of the outfit, Joshua Micah has seen lots of attention on Vine for his 6-second covers and impression videos (Panic! At Disco is my personal favorite) but Knots is a whole new level of pop/indie covers. “I Really Like You” is already just as infectious (and much less annoying) than “Call Me Maybe”, and Knots’ rendition showcases their talent perfectly.
Against The Current ft. Set It Off – Uptown Funk (Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars)
“Uptown Funk” is one of those songs no one can get away from. Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t help but dance when it comes on. Against the Current has endless cover videos but their spin on this popular track was made complete with Set It Off. It is a perfect mix of pop and punk, that makes this horribly overplayed song listenable again.
Louisa Wendorff – Pretty Hurts (Beyonce)/Try (Colbie Caillat)/Who You Are (Jessie J) Mash Up
Louisa is another artist who covered Taylor Swift (her mash up of “Style” and “Blank Space” has been a hot topic all over) but personally some of her other mash ups are much more impressive. These three songs mesh perfectly and Wendorff’s talent is undeniable.
Twenty One Two – Talking Body (Tove Lo)
Tove Lo is taking the pop charts by storm right now. While “Habits (Stay High)” has gotten tons of airplay, some of her other tracks (such as her co-write on Hilary Duff’s ‘Sparks’ and current single “Talking Bodies”) surpass the song that broke her into the mainstream. Twenty One Two put a rock twist on the radio friendly song and made it all their own.
