10 Songs to Get You Through Your Break-up
Words By: Bailey Ziegler
Music heals broken hearts or at least relates to it. If your Valentine’s didn’t quite pan out as you hoped, here’s the playlist to help you cope.
1. “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind
Personally, I find this song a bit funny when used in the right situations. I put this as the first song a break-up playlist I made for one of my best friends. When this song started playing while we were hanging out (I made this the first song) she about died of laughter which is always a good sign.
2. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler
This one is a classic. Heck, I’ve gone to bars and ended up singing this song with friends dramatically when it came on. Everything about this song is so exaggerated and cheesy that I can’t take it seriously (as case with most things from the ‘80s).
3. “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran
This is the perfect song to capture your loneliness and desperation in those darker moments. It’s one of my all time favorites, not just on bad days. There are very few songs that capture raw emotion as well as Sheeran did with this beautiful piece.
4. “When a Heart Breaks” by Ben Rector
Adding to the depressing songs on this list, Rector makes my list. This is probably one of his more popular songs, oddly enough but it’s good nonetheless. Every time this starts playing, it’s a pretty safe bet that I will at the very least tear up.
5. “Octahate” by Ryn Weaver
Break-ups tend to leave me in glass case of emotion. It’s way too much to handle so “Octahate” really helps. It’s a bit all over the place. The music and lyrcis cover anger, loss, and even acceptance.
6. “Relapse” by Divided by Friday
This is what I would call the “DON’T YOU DARE TEXT HIM/HER!” song. You are in emotional rehab and reaching out is the equivalent to falling off the wagon. Your brain in love is pretty similar to your brain on drugs (it’s been proven), which is why you need to quit them cold turkey for a bit.
7. “Reflections” by Misterwives
Just the lyric “Shattering anything that has reflections of you,” is intense enough to make me want to find the nearest mirror and break it. Not to mention, the music itself is upbeat and poppy.
8. “Habits (Stay High)” by Tove Lo
Vices are tricky. On one hand, they can make excellent coping mechanisms. On the other, they can’t cause other problems depending on your choice addiction. For Tove Lo, it was weed in the case of this song. When one of my friends sang this song after her break up, she changed the hook to “Drink All the Time” so go with what works for you.
9. Any Adele Song Ever
This really doesn’t need any explanation. Pick one and get ready for waterworks.
10. “Sweet as Whole” by Sara Barellies
The only thing better than listening to this song when a certain situation occurs is watching the reactions of others listening to it for the first time. All I can say is, if you liked “Love Song”, you’ll love this masterpiece.
