Let the Synth-Pop duo, Surrender The Spirit, take you on a journey. The unconventional musings of this husband and wife duo will command your attention and leave you desiring more, bringing you to their own universe filled with raw and unhinged melodies and lyrics. The band went behind the scenes with us to discuss the story behind their hit track, YNHID (You Never Held It Down).
“The song is mostly it is about being a teenager in Boston. “You Never Held It Down” was something people would say to each other about things like teenage rights of passage. For example, Boy 1 says, “I kissed so and so last night,” and Boy 2 says in disbelief, “You never held it down.”
“YNHID, like all of our songs, was written and recorded at home. Jonathan wrote the melody on electric piano, and the arrangements were done with other instruments and noisemakers. Kristen added the bridge and the fade out; they wrote the lyrics together. We are freaks for 70’s studio recordings so, we wanted to employ as many of those “tricks” as possible: vocal counterpoints, handclaps, and a long fade-out as well as a simple heartbeat beat.”
Lyrics
YNHID (You Never Held It Down)
Back before sugar hit
Talked about what matters it’s
Arms outstretched forever and ever
Hold on for what it’s worth
Will nature ever lift its curse
Hold on for what it’s worth Say that the simple things don’t come easy
Will nature ever lift its curse Say that the simple things don’t come easy
You think it’s easy now
You never held it down
In parking lots
You knew exactly what you were about
Down in those hellish fits
We hold onto the tiny bits Eyes are wide forever and ever Hold on for what its worth
You think it’s easy now
You never held it down
In parking lots
You knew exactly what you were about
You think it’s easy now
You never held it down
In parking lots
You knew exactly what you were about
