Songs From 2014 That Are Better Than The Singles
Words and Picks by Annette Schaefer
Singles are great. We hear them on the radio and we jam to them with our friends. Everyone and their mother knows them, so of course their great. It’s normal to get stuck on just this singles and it’s easy to forget that there’s a whole album of potentially great songs. So in honor of the songs that don’t get the air play, here’s my shout out to all the non-singles that deserve the love.
Gerard Way – How It’s Going To Be
Way’s new album has a lot of fun and interesting new tracks that separate him from his work with My Chemical Romance, but none do this better than the bright, acoustic laced track “How It’s Going To Be.” This song is equally unique and beautiful.
American Authors – Luck
American Authors may be well known for their radio hit “Best Day of My Life,” but they should easily be applauded for their endearing track “Luck” with its strong vocal attacks and powerful lyrics about holding onto dreams even when those you love don’t have your back.
The Used – Make Believe
While Imaginary Enemy is loaded with awesome tracks, and personally, I love the song “Cry,” there isn’t a more freeing or empowering song on that album than “Make Believe.” The song is endlessly catchy and the lyrics are something every young adult seeking independence needs to hear.
The Pretty Reckless – Absolution
From the acoustic guitar intro to the slow but building beat to the dreamy vocals, this song oozes sexiness; there really isn’t a better word for it. “Going to Hell” and “Heaven Knows” may be rocking the airwaves, but “Absolution” is what I’m jamming to.
Meghan Trainor – Close Your Eyes
I was definitely enticed by Meghan Trainor’s breakthrough hit “All About That Bass,” but the song “Close Your Eyes,” off her recently released EP Title, show’s Trainor’s softer and more soulful side; it’s definitely a side worth hearing.
Taking Back Sunday – Beat Up Car
In all honesty, I was not a huge fan of the first single “Flicker Fade” off of Taking Back Sunday’s Happiness Is… so it was track’s like “Beat Up Car” that reminisced the band’s older sound that really sold me on this album.
Echosmith – March Into The Sun
Even though this album is actually from last year, the music from it is certainly making waves in 2014 and its tracks are definitely worth the fuss. This song was an instant favorite from the first listen. The song is bright and fun and even outshines the band’s hit single “Cool Kids” in my book.
All Time Low – Oh Calamity!
Another track that came out last year but has still left it’s mark on 2014 was All Time Low’s fan favorite track “A Love Like War,” but off their extended release of Don’t Panic, it’s the tender “Oh Calamity!” that takes the cake for me.
Lily Allen – Close Your Eyes
This is song number two on this list called “Close Your Eyes” and much like it’s same named predecessor this song is irresistible, soulful, and all around sexy. It stands out from the more fun, pop vibe that consume the rest of Sheezus.
Anberlin – Hearing Voices
I had my doubts about this album during my first couple of listens, but the song that really turned it around was the boldly religious “Hearing Voices.” The lyrics are a powerful message of faith and the song has an unforgettable melody. It’s definitely one of the biggest highlights of the band’s final album.
