Nashville based rock outfit, Dinner and A Suit, have spent two years on an upswing since the release of their 2012 LP, Since Our Departure. Now, the band is proud to present their newest EP, Stay, which drops today, October 7th. Vocalist/Guitarist, John Capeci broke down each song and it’s meaning in our newest Track By Track.
“Can’t Get Enough”
Even though it’s the first track, this song was the last one that we wrote for the EP. We were really excited about this being the first glimpse into our new music, as it’s been a while since our last release. Thematically, this song is about being inside your own head; not being able to turn off your mind and focus. I think with a lot of things in life, it’s more of a mental battle than anything. I know we deal with it a lot ourselves, so we felt that is was something worth saying.
“Get You Back”
This was the first song that we wrote that made this EP. It definitely felt like a catalyst or breakthrough for our writing. We had written a bunch of songs prior to this, but ‘Get You Back’ was the first one that we thought HAD to be recorded. This song is about being on a plane and missing someone. I wanted to convey the feeling of distance, travel, and urgency. The chorus is painfully hopeful. We wanted to highlight the soulful feel so we’ve incorporated elements like 3 part harmonies, alternative percussion, and very minimal instrumentation in the verses.
“A Way Out”
We wrote 95% of this song in a hotel room during SXSW in Austin, Texas. It started as the verse groove and built from there. The verses in this song are also more upbeat and aggressive than a lot of our songs, so I really wanted to convey that feeling with the lyrics and melody. This song also went through the most transformation of any on the EP; we had 3 or 4 versions of this one before we landed on the final one. In fact, until the week before we recorded, we were pretty sure this song wasn’t going to make the cut.
“Everything That You Do”
This is the most personal song on the record for me. All of us in the band felt really strongly about this one. I remember playing it during the writing process and all of us looking at each other afterwards because we had all felt something really special. The whole theme of this EP is about wandering, making mistakes, and growing up, and this song illustrates those feelings for me. The artwork for this record is a silhouette, and in the first verse of this song there is a line that says “I see the way she moves right over me like a silhouette,” which also ties everything together for the last song.
