So Long Solo – So Long Solo
Review by Annette Schaefer
The quirky husband and wife duo, So Long Solo, released their first full length album on Sept. 9. On this self titled release this twosome teamed up with Grammy winning producer, Mitch Dane, to showcase their lighthearted and eclectic brand of indie folk.
The album starts off with tracks “Worth the Fight” and “Everything for Two” which successfully introduce the listener to the duo’s low-key sound that is presented with an array of instrumentation including guitar, piano, tambourine, ukulele and even accordion, but neither stands out as truly strong tracks.
The first stand out track comes in with “End of the Rainbow” with a bouncy beat and rhythmic chanting. The song feels light and catchy and is exactly what you would hope to hear from a group like So Long Solo. The two also nail it on softer tracks “January” and “Awaken.” Both are sweet love tinged songs that easily capture So Long Solo’s great since of harmony.
While at times this album can seem a bit raw and lacking in that crisp sound, many of us have come accustomed to hearing, and some of the lyrics cans seem just a bit silly (particularly on “Little Rabbit”), in all honesty it all really just makes the album all the more genuine and quirky.
There definitely is plenty of room to grow for this folksy act, but they have shown that they are capable of bringing some real sweet melodies to the table with this debut. It will be interesting to see what’s in store next for So Long Solo.
