Backstory
Essentially the inspiration behind “Drama King” came from our realization that our twenties aren’t as bad as we had initially thought them to be. We started this band fresh out of college with a lot of pent-up resentment and hesitation toward growing up or getting a career. And those themes would be projected into our music; specifically our previous single, “Slow Down Charlie.” In the short time between releasing “SDC” and recording “Drama King,” we did a lot of maturing; both as songwriters and as human beings. “Drama King” perfectly describes the battle that the four of us fought with ourselves to get to where we are today. It leaves you with an understanding that it’s not that bad and it could be a hell of a lot worse. I’m nothin’ but a Drama King…
Lyrics
“Another six months of overcast
Chilly nights and early sunsets
My mind is absent, counting brake lights flashing in the distance
It’s not something you get use to
Cold sweats and a hazy view
I swear that I’m not the only one that’s given up on this town
(Chorus)
It’s such a long walk back to the start
Because I’m paranoid, shaking, and failing
And I’ve got so much left to say, I’ll probably never find a way
I guess I’m nothin’ but a drama king anyway
Cause I may be overreacting
But I’m pretty sure that the sky is fallin’
And I’m dead set on a getaway that takes me anywhere but here
And then halfway through the seasons change
While we hope and wait for summer rain
While the smell of the cut grass keeps me sane until the next go-around
(Chorus)
(Guitar Solo)
Cause this plane’s stuck on autopilot
Goin’ down and I can’t fight it
I’m speaking hypothetically
I hope this town is as miserable as me
Fucked up is an understatement
I seldom smile, but I’ll always fake it
I’m longing inconsistency
I hope this town is as miserable –
(Chorus)
It’s such a long walk back to the start
(Back to the start)
Because I’m paranoid, shaking, and failing
(Turn it all around, gimme whatcha got now)
And I’ve got so much left to say
I’ll probably never find a way
I guess I’m nothin’ but a drama king anyway”
