How did you get your start in music?
I came across music through acting when I was pretty young. I had tried and was terrible at literally every other extra curricular activity before I was able to convince my mom to let me take acting classes, which then led to voice lessons. I pretty much fell in love with singing instantly! I dabbled in songwriting while in high school but struggled to find my own voice. It wasn’t until a few years later that I acknowledged this nagging feeling that I had something to say to the world as an artist. I just couldn’t let that go, so I decided to dive in and make music my life.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
If I’m going to be honest, I really have to say that my biggest career highlight so far has been creating “Drive” and my upcoming EP Hey Shayna Leigh. I am really proud of it. It can be such a challenge to create something (anything- music, a painting, writing) that tells the stories you want to tell. I want my music to be hopeful. I want it to tell stories of overcoming hardship, of experiencing life’s ups and downs and choosing to keep going. Stories of people who show up and do their best no matter what. I feel like this EP is the closest I’ve gotten to doing that, which makes me happier than I can say.
Why should people listen to you? What makes you different?
I think every artist has a story to tell and is worthy of listening to. I try to tell the truth. I try to be both uplifting and grounded in the reality of how difficult life can be at times. I like to think that my sound is organically unique not because I try to make it different. I hope it’s honest. Also, I am just a regular person doing the best I can. I’d like to believe that’s something listeners can relate to!
