The Sun And The Sea – American Empire
Review By Geoff Burns
After the indie/rock band The Graduate decided to call it quits in 2011, band members Tim Moore, Max Sauer and Matt Kennedy recruited Chris Rhein and form what is now The Sun And The Sea.
The band just self-released their debut album American Empire and it stands as a growth for the musicians. The album is filled with electronic vibrant sounds that overlap chilling vocals and steady drum beats throughout each song.
After releasing two previous EPs, the band has finally captured their natural sound and it shows on American Empire. But before listening to the record, fans should be hesitant about relying all of their attention on the lyrical side of the album and more on the electronic instrumentals throughout the record. This is what makes the album stand out on its own. Listeners will definitely feel this vibe from the album’s opening track “Follow The Light,” especially in the bridge of the track where distant drums meet with electronic instrumentation.
But that’s not to say the lyrics and vocals shouldn’t be ignored either. The highlight of the vocals sparks from the track “You.” The Sun And The Sea isn’t a band you should only listen to for unique electronic instrumentation alone, and this track demonstrates why. It showcases how much talent the band has to offer and although it won’t be the same sound as what The Graduate had to give, it still perfects an original sound.
Whether it be the electronic synth sounds or even the capturing vocals throughout the album that have you attached to the American Empire, The Sun And The Sea’s release still works. While there are very few indications of similarity from The Graduate to The Sun And The Sea, fans shouldn’t be disappointed to what this album has to offer. From here on out, The Sun And The Sea will only grow, and that is something you should definitely be excited about.
