“Best I Never Had”
Why and how did you start playing music?
Music was a pretty natural thing for me. I was picking up my dad’s instruments from a really young age, and at a certain point, I fell in love with blues guitar. My grandfather played blues piano professionally his whole life, so that definitely inspired the blues in me. From there, I decided I wanted to sing and play blues guitar. And shortly after that, I decided I wanted to write catchy tunes, play blues guitar, and sing. It just kind of took a life of its own.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Playing the Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown was one of the highlights. It’s a festival that is held every year in my home town. They have a big stage where you usually house big acts that attract a lot of people. I’ve been playing my guitar for tips on the street during that festival for a few years now, but this year, because of some local gigging I’ve done around the area, I caught the attention of the events coordinator of the festival. I got to open for Curtis Grimes and the Bellamy Brothers to a crowd of a couple thousand. It was definitely a good night!
Why should people listen to you? What makes you different?
I think a lot of things make me different. For me the guitar playing and instrumentation has always been first. I love a good tune and good vocal, but if the instrumentation isn’t unique in and of itself, you could have any decent singer come and sing on a song. I’m a production nerd. I love modern production with looped drums, synthesizers, and pads, but I also love the raw aspect of music. I think the two things blended together makes something really incredible. I like to make sure the song is really good acoustically. After that, you record it just like the synths don’t exist. Then, after all of that, you add to it with the synths. I think that process makes my music unique.
