Five Albums to Get You Through a Slump
Words and Picks by Daisy Marietta
If you’re like me, or most people in America, you get caught up in things. Whether they’re small things or big things, you end up feeling burnt out, defeated, disappointed, or a combination of such feelings. Especially if you lead a busy lifestyle, sometimes it’s hard to feel inspired or motivated. These are some of the albums I listen to on a constant basis that keep me going. Life is all about perspective and how you see things, right? Anything can be seen a number of ways, it’s all about how you want it to affect you.
letlive. – The Blackest Beautiful
The Blackest Beautiful, letlive.’s third album, was released just this past summer 2013. It’s grown on me in many different ways, to the point where it now acts as a tool to help get me through tough times. Even if it’s just a hard morning or I’m feeling down, I put on this album and the heaviness and the genuine desperation saves me. Listening to the song “Virgin Dirt” I find myself incredibly introspective, and it definitely gives you a lighter view on life.
Brand New – The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
This has been one of my favorite albums for years, since it first came out in 2006. Although Brand New could be considered depressing by some, I actually find them incredibly uplifting at times. If you go in desiring a certain perspective, they will certainly help you achieve that by the end. Really listening to the lyrics and perceiving the album almost like a story in its entirety is an experience.
Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles has always been a strange one for me, being that their music is not like most others 0 their sound is a little off the wall. They certainly don’t try to fit in and I find that incredibly comforting. Something happens when I’m listening to this weird album, and I just feel calmer and more prepared to take on life. There’s no specific positive or negative emotion that they seem to be going for; it’s simply a form of art being expressed that relaxes me and gets me ready for the next day, or the next task I must take on.
Passion Pit – Manners
Passion Pit is still to this day an underrated band in my opinion. With catchy tunes and lyrics that avoid being plopped into the “pop” category, this album will get you moving and feeling just a little bit higher. Sometimes all you need is a few high-energy tunes to keep you feeling up.
Secret Empire – Storm Command
I have a lot of talented friends, but this album really took the cake in terms of uplifting music. This is an album I can’t get enough of, and although it does help me get out of a slump, it’s really effective for any time of day, and in any mood. Enjoy the soft crooning of singer Connor Ragan’s voice, the deep and meaningful lyrics, and the soft melodies.
