We were able to catch up with Last In Line and get the full story behind their song, “Homecoming.” There might be some who absolutely hate the idea of coming home, and for good reasons, but I think the word home is pretty comforting to most of us. This is especially true for Jake Singer. Singer moved away to college and soon felt the desire to move back home to focus on music. “Homecoming” is about his journey back home. It’s about his journey back to music.
Backstory:
This is one of the first songs that Last In Line wrote as a band. It came together musically from our old guitarist Jon Kraft and was then accompanied by Jake Singer’s lyrics. The whole idea of the song is about Jake being stuck as a freshman in college 3 hours away from his hometown. Soon after going to school he realized that college was not for him and that he wanted to come home and start a band. The first line of the song questions why he didn’t feel in place since he was looking forward to going away to school and starting a new life. It goes on to tell about the several times he would write his newly formed band’s Facebook page on a white board hanging outside of his door. People would constantly walk by and erase it, but he continued to put it up everyday. As time went on, he started counting down the days when he could come home and get back to the music. The song talks about waiting until early May when the semester at school ended and getting out of what felt like a prison. The rest of the song pretty much tells how the experience helped him find his true passion in life, which is music. It helped him create his true goals and dreams rather than try to live in a false reality. Lastly, the song questions whether the year away was worth it for the lesson that was learned and talks about finally coming home. It leaves the question open ended not determining what the fate of the band would be. As for that part, that is still being unfolded every day.
Lyrics
Is there something wrong with me? Is this where I’m supposed to be?
Oh no! I didn’t picture it like this
I put my name out on the line but I was wasting all my time
I guess it’s cool to erase my lines
I couldn’t wait til’ early May just to know where I would be
So get me out of this place!
And hopefully it won’t be long til’ I can be gone and free of this
This place has gotten in my mind and is helping me to find
Everything that I should be!
I never thought that this would be my wake up call
Was it worth it all? Was it worth it all?
I know it won’t be long until I can come home to you again
(until I can come home to you)
Come home to you again
