Against Me! – Transgender Dysphoria Blues
Review by Annette Schaefer
In 2012 Against Me! fans were shocked when lead singer, Tom Gable, came out as transgendered. Some wondered what this meant for the future of the band. Clearly fans had nothing to worry about. Now, going on two years later, the band has been back and on tour with now front woman Laura Jane Grace, and on Tuesday the band released Transgender Dysphoria Blues their follow-up to 2010’s White Crosses.
The latest album from Against Me! was probably one of the most anticipated albums this year for the alternative rock community, at least I know I was anxiously waiting for its release. Transgender Dysphoria Blues comes off as a bit of a step back in time for the band with a rougher and grittier sound than their last two releases. These songs are less polished, but definitely pack more of a punch.
Personally, though, it was the more melodic and catchy sound of their album White Crosses that made me fall in love with them in the first place. With this new release the songs definitely have more energy and sass, but it lacks that special spark I was hoping to hear again. None of the songs were bad, but none of them really stood out.
There was one gem on the album, though. The song, “Two Coffins” is a stripped down love song that pierces your heart with beautiful lyrics such as “How lucky I ever was to see, the way that you smiled at me. Your little moon face shining bright at me. One day soon there’ll be nothing left of you and me.” The track is short and simple, but is undeniably pretty.
While this album wasn’t quite a homerun for me, it still has some bright moments and makes me look forward to all the great music that I know Against Me! will continue to release.
Overall Rating: 3/5
