It started with Nick Twohig’s interest in creating a studio project with former bandmates. Those intentions eventually collided with other musical talent that led to indie rock band, The Deep North. If the creative formation of the Boston, Massachusetts group doesn’t capture your attention, the bands music will. Go pick up their latest, Sound & Light.

How did you form?
NT: The Deep North really came out of a desire play music with people I really connected with, not only musically, but also on a personal level. After my previous band had broken up, I had written some songs with my friend Brad (who played keys in the early days of TDN). We toyed around with the idea of recording them as a one-off studio project, but as we started the demo process, we just got more and more serious about it.
DN: Nick [Twohig] and I had been friends since playing in a band together in high school. We really hit it off from the beginning, and had remained close even after that band ended. I remember Nick sharing the early-TDN demos with me before I came onto the project. It was great stuff even in the early stages of the tunes.
RF: I had been looking for a band to join when I had heard through the grapevine that these guys were putting a group together. First off, I really loved the name! But after hearing the instrumental demos they’d put together, I knew this was the band I’d been looking for. As soon as we’d met up for the first time, I suggested calling my friend Nick Angelo to come in on drums. Once we all got in the room and played, it felt like a perfect fit.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
RF: Definitely one of the bigger moments for us was being featured in Alternative Press and having them compare us to Death Cab for Cutie, who are one of our favorite bands. It was just completely surreal to see our name in a magazine that we had all grown up reading. Absolutely crazy.
NT: I remember getting the phone call from Rebecca with the news while I was out Christmas shopping. I was just speechless. To see your band’s name in a national publication for the first time is one of the greatest feelings. Especially considering we had just put out our first EP!
Why should people listen to you? What makes your music different?
NT: We write and play and record these songs because we love doing it. I can’t imagine not doing it. So, for us, it’s not that we’ve set out to prove that we’re different than other bands, but it’s more about having this passion for what we do, and wanting to share it with as many people as possible.
NA: Also, we give out free stickers at our shows. So that’s pretty neat.
