The Assembly Line will soon be releasing their new EP, The Places We Leave Behind, on 9/17 and we all thought it would be great to show you some insight into their song, “Tonight (There’s Only Us)” which you will be able to find on the new release. Vocalist and guitarist, Thor Nguyen, shared with us the story behind the song as well as the lyrics. Take a look below and don’t forget to grab a copy of their EP on 9/17!
Background:
Our song “Tonight (There’s Only Us)” came together last summer, in our rehearsal space, which was somewhere near 100 degrees. We were at the point as a group that we wanted to play new songs, and I had this guitar riff I had been playing for a while but didn’t know what to do with it. So I played it and mentioned to Josh that I really wanted to do something with a disco-y dance type beat. So Josh and I are looping this hook for the longest time while Zach and Chris started putting their layers into it. It started to sound half-way decent and we rolled with it.
For me the hardest part about writing this song was the lyrics. I had an idea for the chorus but felt a little uncomfortable with it because it felt generic and awkward. The band knows of my long frustration with the direction of the song. In fact, I had written a whole new chorus that eventually turned into our other song “Empires”. It was then that I decided to try to make it mean something to me. So I wrote it about my relationship with my wife. We had just gotten married a few months before. There are lines scattered through the song that are speaking to her. The chorus is just a celebration of a moment in time, being with the people you care about and making that window of experience count. And I hope people that listen to it can take it and make it their own.
