Confide – All Is Calm
Review by Steve Smith
Very rarely does a band go on hiatus for such a long time, only to come back with arguably their greatest record ever. Well, for Los Angeles hardcore band, Confide, that certainly was the case. After coming to agreement in 2010 that it would be best for the band to just part ways, a surge of enormous support from fans, friends, and family following the break up had the band sold on recording another record. Fast forward to July 30th, 2013, and the boys from Cali are at it again; heavier, faster, and more dynamic than ever. All Is Calm marks the third full length release from Confide. Trust me; this one will blow you away.
The record gets off to a fierce start with the opening track, “Rise Up”. The first minute of the song really sets the tone for not just the rest of the song itself, but the album as well. The powerful lyrics combined with the well structured instrumental melodies consisting of one hell of breakdown and genius sampling work; make “Rise Up” the perfect opener.
There’s a wave of great heavy melodies combined with catchy sing-along choruses throughout majority of the record. However, there’s a nice little interlude in the middle of the record. “Give Me A Voice”, really gives Joel Piper a chance to show off his pipes and his sampling skills.
The record definitely hits its strongest point early on with tracks three and four. “We Just Wanted Freedom”, gives a very opinionated and in-depth look at the first amendment. It gives, “freedom of speech”, a whole new meaning. The last thirty seconds of the song is outstandingly structured with a smashing breakdown and cut-throat lyrics. “Days Are Gone”, is a beautiful song combined with awesome sampling work, heavy throw downs, and gripping lyrics that will make you wish the song would never have to end. It’s anchored by the piercing lyrics, “Make your life count. Start living your future. Stop living your past.”
Overall, I was surprised but extremely pleased with this record, and I think the fans will be as well. It’s definitely a roller coaster ride for your eardrums. This is easily Confide at their finest. Believe me, just when you thought it was all over and they couldn’t outdo themselves, Confide went ahead and made, “All Is Calm”.
Overall Rating: 8/10
