Fox & Cats – “This Is Your Brain On Love”

0

Songs tend to come from one of two places; a joyful part of life or a dark time the artist has experienced. In this case, Fox & Cat’s song, “This Is Your Brain On Love,” originates from that bad place in time. Take a look at what was going on during the making of that song and what it is ultimately about below. Don’t forget to also take a glance at the lyrics and pick up a copy of the EP here.

Backstory:
I originally wrote this song on an acoustic guitar in my parents’ attic, where a majority of my songwriting seems to take place. It very quickly grew into what it is today after we spent some time practicing with drums and electric guitar. This song, like most of our songs, came from me being at a very low point. All I felt like doing at the time was drinking. In fact, this is one of the few songs on the record where I was completely hammered during the vocal takes. It even got to the point where I couldn’t sleep and completely stopped showing up to work. This song is really just about dealing with depression and how it can affect life in general. The second half of the song reflects on the loss of a meaningful relationship which ultimately was the source of my depression.

Lyrics

Too mentally unstable to work
My friends have all become an endless faceless blur
That just stretches on
And I’ve come undone just to give them what they want
I turned them off turned them off
you turn them on

I was only seventeen when I first hoped that I could get
the past to come back come back to me

Too physically exhausted to sleep
I just toss and turn
I try to pick myself up but I’m weak
Are these bruises earned
And everybody’s saying the same things
I just turn them off turn them off
you turn them on

I had just turned twenty three when I last hoped that I could get
Your heart to come back
Just come back to me
And I had just fallen asleep
When I first dreamed of you and me and all the ways things used to be

But I was too far gone to hold it in
I went and said some things I did not mean
Then I pushed you out in to the sea
The current drew you far away from me
Soon the clouds rolled in to block our view
It wouldn’t be too long ’till I had forgotten you
My hands grew cold my knees got weak
I knew that all I’d be was a memory
Would you remember me
Would you remember me
Would you remember me
Would you remember me
