That being said, Blue & Gold eschews those convictions that modern pop stands for — mostly because of Chloe. She follows the Jack White model as a producer: She wants growl, grit, and grime in everything we do. It’s this vision that grounds us and is constantly pushing my songwriting. Chloe injects an equal amount of catchy and ballsy in her songs. Whenever I write something, I’m gunning for that feel. “It’s Only You” is no exception.
GG’s drumming is also a big influence. She’s amazing to have in the band. Her all-time drum crush is Travis Barker, but she knew that she needed to hold back on this recording to serve the song — that’s the mark of a truly great drummer, in my opinion. Nick Salcido, our bassist on the track, also stays reserved and tasteful here. He’s a musical genius and a great friend, and we were thrilled to have him play on the EP.
“It’s Only You” has the biggest soul vibe of any of our songs. I was aiming for that no frills, stripped down feel we always go for. But I wanted to make sure that melody — even though there’s no traditional chorus — stayed at the forefront. I think I struck a nice balance. Lyrically, I’m playing off some familiar territory: Man loves woman. Man cheats on woman. Man begs for forgiveness. This dude probably isn’t very sorry, though — his apology includes the line, “An honest man just can’t be found,” indicating that he doesn’t really think it’s his fault. Will he do it again? I’ll leave that up to you.
Lyrics
I’m begging please and asking how
How I got to be so blind
To ever think I could be so unkindWell you got me under your thumb
You get me going and then I know I’m doneAn honest man just can’t be found
I make mistakes, put myself underground
It’s only you could break my heart
Forget the rest, I don’t wanna be apartWell you got me under your thumb
You get me going and then I know I’m done
You get me going and then I know I’m doneIt’s only you
It’s only you
It’s only you
It’s only you could break my heart
