A Great Big Pile of Leaves – You’re Always On My Mind
Reviewed by Colleen Casey
A Great Big Pile of Leaves is an indie pop rock band from Brooklyn. The band’s second full-length, You’re Always On My Mind, is a new addition on the rising list of incredible releases for Topshelf Records.
This album couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s mid summer, and if you still haven’t found that perfect record for you to spin while sipping a smoothie, hanging at the beach, or driving in your car, then look no further than You’re Always On My Mind as your summer soundtrack. As a matter of fact, I am listening to it right now while writing this on my back patio. The cover art on this album includes a pizza, skateboard, and a hamburger, which is a sure indication that it’s going to give off some good vibes.
I only recently heard of A Great Big Pile of Leaves after they played as openers on a leg of The Front Bottoms’ summer tour. I wish I had known about them sooner because this band does not disappoint. This album includes songs about love and losses, while keeping an upbeat tone that can’t help but make you overjoyed and want to dance and sing along. It’s an album that takes you back to when you were a kid, giving off a very nostalgic feel and making you think about the good times that life throws at you.
A Great Big Pile of Leaves show off their striking songwriting with their lyrics and musical production. One of my favorite tracks off the album is “Pet Mouse,” featuring Motion City Soundtrack’s front man, Justin Pierre. Showing off their playful side, they have a song called “Pizzanomics,” which includes lyrics about that wonderful food that everyone loves.
If you’re into music that will make you feel great and haven’t checked out this band yet, I highly recommend that you do so. You’re Always On My Mind will get you on the path for a fun and enjoyable summer.
