The Joy Of Painting – Tender Age
Review by Jennifer Boylen

Tender Age is a hidden gem.  It’s a record that I honestly probably would not have come across if I hadn’t been searching for it, but man am I glad I did.  These Nashville natives have created an album that meshes an old school rock vibe with catchy pop vocals.  The Joy of Painting compiled seven songs of honest lyrics and raw instrumentals that you can’t help but love.

“High Definitions” is a bit more gritty and full than the rest Tender Age.  It has great effects on the vocals and some great in-your-face percussion that makes it quite unique within this compilation.

“Ghost” feels modern in comparison to the rest of the tracks.  The vocals stand out and it is a very fresh melody, so the song itself stands out as well.

“Back To Romance” doesn’t seem like your typical love song.  It’s more upbeat than I expected from the title, but it’s got tell-tale rock and roll bones so it gives a sort of a nostalgic feel to a pop vibe.

I loved the vocals on “Good Mood,” but personally I am not a fan of horns.  If you are: this song pulls it off flawlessly, it’s just not my cup of tea.

“I Didn’t Think” is guitar driven and perfect.  It’s like an anthem in disguise.  It has a bluesy structure and rock attitude that can’t be missed.

“Dontchu Wanna” and “I’m Reelin” are my favorites.  I think the lyrics “dontchu wanna make coffee and eat food” is what sold it for me in “Dontchu Wanna”; what else could anyone want out of life? Plus the upbeat acoustic guitar and feel good tone of the vocals didn’t hurt either. “I’m Reelin” is just…creative.  I was pleasantly surprised from start to finish.  Whether it was by the instrument choices or the unexpected melody in the chorus, I fell in love with this track.  But, it also had clapping so I really had no other choice; when it’s done right you have to love clapping and The Joy of Painting definitely delivered.
