This Century – Biography of Heartbreak
Review by Allison Reames
The quintet This Century has done it again. Biography of Heartbreak is the band’s second full-length album amidst a few EPs, and is without a doubt their best work yet.
Their sophomore album has the potential to be the band’s big break. Through this album, they have shown how far they have come and how much they have matured since their first full-length album, Sound of Fire, was released in early 2011; which featured three sampler songs that the band previously released on their EP Hopeful Romantic.
As a fan of This Century from their earlier days, personally I began to lose interest in the band, but Biography of Heartbreak is what caught my attention and reeled me back in. The songs that they have already released are sure to stick in your head with their feel-good summer essence and great vibes.
It is a solid album from start to finish, with songs such as “Run and Hide” and “Fool’s Game” that show off vocalist Joel Kanitz’s powerful range along with “Slow Dance Night” which features a catchy guitar riff throughout the song.
The title track “Biography of Heartbreak” has a bit of an edge to it with its “na na nas” amidst the urging that “you gotta let it go.” Its contrasting edge serves as the perfect transition to the steady beat of the album finisher “Deadly Weapon.”
With the transformation and growth that the band experienced throughout the past two years, Biography of Heartbreak is sure to put This Century on the charts and in speakers everywhere. This Century’s Biography of Heartbreak is a must have to kick off the summer… and to end it. It is a strong album from start to finish. With time, This Century will become a household name in regards to music and will be on summer playlists all the way until it ends in September.
