DWHB – Dog Park
Review by Heather Phillips

With Austin, TX being the “music capital of the world” it may seem like a lot of bands tend to blend together and slip through the cracks of originality, but that’s where DWHB differs.  The Austin trio just released their newest full length, Dog Park, which offers a fresh new take on hip hop and is full of hooks that will be stuck in your head for days.

Even though I’m not a fan of the hip hop genre (just not my style), I oddly enjoy everything this group has put out.  Their previous album True Facts had many tracks that I loved, but Dog Park as a whole seems much more well crafted and a good step forward for the group.

The thing I love about DWHB is that their lyrics are witty and extremely clever without being tacky and trying too hard. (Not to mention I fully appreciate anyone that can work a Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones reference into their songs) I will say that you need to have a sense of humor and the ability to not be easily offended to fully appreciate the tracks on this album as a lot of the lyrical content is not PG rated, as expected.

The great thing about this band is that they do everything themselves; the lyrics, recordings, everything is done completely by the 3 of them. I will admit I get pretty skeptical when I hear of bands being completely DIY;  I automatically fear the recordings will be very garage band/sloppy sounding, but Dog Park sounds like it was put together in a fancy studio with a big name producer.

The band currently has both of their albums available for a free download on their band camp site, but honestly, for songs this good why wouldn’t you want to drop some dollars and these albums?  Even if you aren’t a fan of the genre, I urge you to check out this album as soon as possible.  I guarantee this album will get stuck in your head for days and make you reconsider how you feel about hip hop in general.

Overall Rating: 4/5
Recommended tracks:  “Colder Every Day” and “Cool Runnings”
