The Neighbourhood – I Love You
Reviewed by Haley Black
It seemed as if The Neighbourhood almost popped up overnight when I began hearing their single “Sweater Weather” on my local radio station. At first listen, I immediately realized that they had a certain spark about them that made them stand out among other artists with their fresh and original style. Because of this I was anxiously awaiting the release of their debut full length, I Love You, to see what else they had to offer.
“Female Robbery” was previously released on their most recent EP along with “Sweater Weather,” but it is probably the most noteworthy track on the band’s LP. The intro is the most unique, complete with echoing screams and ringing bells. While the chorus is simple, coupled with crashing drum beats and eccentric sound effects in the background, it is catchy and memorable.
“Afraid” is a track full of angst and frustration, yet it somehow remains cool and collected. Although it doesn’t necessarily reek of lyrical genius, the message is blunt and everyone wants to let out a “you suck” every once in awhile.
I really enjoy the sound of the spacey guitar effects and echoing drum beats throughout the album; especially in the intro to “Flawless.” In this day and age, the experimentation with different sound effects and synthesizers is growing, and The Neighbourhood has this craft down to a T.
In its entirety, the tracks run together and it’s easy to get lost in what song you’re listening to if you listen to the album front to back. There are very few specific tracks that leave a lasting impression because they are all so similar. Jesse Rutherford’s vocals are fluid and soulful, but in the future I would like to hear a little more vocal range from him.
The Neighbourhood’s contemporary and experimental rock style is refreshing and has a modern twist, which is just what the music industry needs. This band has so much potential and they are capable of creating huge waves. One thing they definitely do have going for them is the fact that they have already established a signature sound unlike anyone else, and considering they are new on the scene I believe that they can only grow as musicians.
