Buxter Hoot’n is an americana band from San Francisco, California, who began making an impression on the world when they formed in 2006. After their 2010 album, In Another Life, the band got extreme recognition from the American Music Association and Jambands.com by staying on their top charts for four consecutive months. More recently, the band has caught our attention with their most recent EP titled, Na Na Na. We are proud to say that Buxter Hoot’n is now one of our Highlighted Artists. How did the band form?
Brothers, Vince and Jimmy Dewald, put together Buxter Hoot’n in 2006 after moving to San Francisco from Northern Indiana. It started from a Craigslist ad searching for a drummer. Within a week’s time the brothers had met both Jeremy Shanok and Ben Andrews and the band was formed. Melissa Merrill joined the band about a year later. She began hanging out with the band late night after shows trading songs and singing old blues. It sounded so good that she joined the band full-time.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
A definite highlight has to be hanging out with Ramblin’ Jack Elliot when we both played NPR’s West Coast Live. He has been a hero of ours for a long time and we found out that they don’t call him Ramblin’ Jack just because of his traveling ways. He had many a great story to tell. We were literally hanging out with one of the great American sages. And, I only say “American” because his experience is so profoundly American, but his wisdom is universal.
Why should people listen to you? What makes you different?
We come from the heart. There are no illusions with this band. We are all interested in art that sheds inhibitions and false fronts. Our music, our lyrics, our vocal approaches, everything we do, all spawns from the intention of getting beyond the surface and bringing something raw, honest and soulful to the world. Our music has always been a process of healing and liberation for ourselves and our goal is always to share that dialouge with an audience whether it is through our recordings or our live show. We are not a star trip kind of rock band. Musically, we have always been steeped in traditional forms like blues and folk and straight ahead rock & roll but we are not just copping old feels and recycling old forms. We listen to whats happening now and strive to create our own contemporary sound. Our new EP Na Na Na is a full bloom example of us merging our musical worlds into a unique band sound.
