I Call Fives – I Call Fives
Album Reviewed by Morgan Waldorf
I Call Five’s self titled LP is an example of pop punk at it’s finest. With the addition of their new vocalist Jeff Todd I Call Fives, who have been around for 5 years, have followed up last years Someone That’s Not You EP with a strong record that shows their potential to become a huge band in the pop punk scene.
“Late Nights” gives the album a perfect start as a breakup song with an extremely catchy chorus and some screaming vocals, setting the expectations for what is to come on the record. The second track “Obvious” may be the best on the record as it’s just as catchy with a stand out hook (I’ll have to climb into a casket to get as low as you just went) and sure to be a sing along on repeat.
The track “Backup Plan” is a song that was on the band’s Someone That’s Not You EP rereleased on this record, providing a familiar, favorite track for fans and a chance to hear the song for brand new listeners. Songs like “The Fall Guy” and “We Were Right Together We Were Wrong Together” are typical songs about relationships that most would expect by a pop punk band but I Call Fives address any New Found Glory or early Fall Out Boy comparisons by nodding at a few of their influences in “Stuck In ’03” (I was listening to Take This To Your Grave, So Long Astoria and Nothing Gold Can Stay), another stand out track on the record.
42 second song “Enemy” is a quick burst of fast paced high energy. After that the album effortlessly switches gears going into “Wrong Things” a bit slower, very positive song about moving on (I won’t lose out anymore, I won’t live that way). “Regrets And Setbacks” is another highlight at the tail end of the record that feels like a pop punk anthem just begging for a giant sing along at shows.
Overall this album does a phenomenal job of combining the catchiness and prominent hooks needed for a quintessential pop punk record. While there may be countless bands who grew up listening to New Found Glory and Less Than Jake making music, I Call Fives are one of the ones that seems to have captured the feel of pop punk music perfectly and seem destined to make a name for themselves in the scene, one warped tour crowd at a time.
