Fox The Cat
Interview by McKenzie Hughes

From the words of Abe, Fox The Cat’s guitarist, and Casey, Fox The Cat’s lead singer, they both grew up together in Cleveland, OH, and that is where their musical endeavors began. Abe and Casey knew for the past few years that working together on music was a goal they continued to focus on achieving.

Eventually after living in Chicago for a year, they formed Fox The Cat and within a week they acquired Abe’s roommate Jimmy, Fox The Cat’s rhythm guitarist, to be the third member of the band. In that same week their friend Luke volunteered to join the group on bass.  Being friends benefitted the launch of their career but they struggled to gain a drummer.  Almost a month later, the band was fortunate enough to have Paul, a friend from Cleveland, move to Chicago to attend a local-art’s school. The result of their strong friendship ties gave the band a chance to collaborate their hobbies into a work of art.

Through finding a common ground within their friendships, Fox The Cat has plans in the future to travel to where each member is from for performances. Although, currently their main focus is dominating through marketing within the Chicago-land area and gaining a strong, steady and consistent fan base.

Through their local shows in Chicago, they are fortunate enough to have close friends give them exactly what they need; support, honesty and feedback. Fox The Cat has learned the proper way to accept improvements and take feedback that pushes them further into the positive end of their careers with room to improve.

Aside from playing local shows throughout Chicago, Fox The Cat recorded their first 3 song EP. Their ‘Highlight(ing)’ memory from the recording process was their final listen where the band realized that their music came together with a steady, consistent flow while they learned that they’re not only going to be friends for a long time but they will continue to focus on creating music as well.

Casey briefly gave Highlight a chance to get a ‘Song-By-Song meaning’ on their recent release:

  1. (All I Need) is a song about being surrounded by nature with no worries besides on how you will survive. Not about a missed call or any kind of materialistic lifestyle. Sometimes we seem to lose ourselves in all the busy day-to-day events.  He put himself in the situation of living off of land like we used to and rediscover the beauty in it.
  2. (Drifter) is based on the theory of  ‘Shadow People’. The idea of being alone and in the dark. You’re mind can start to play tricks on you to the point where you start to have a feeling of someone watching or trying to tell you something.  We sometimes forget how short our lives really are and the feeling of being scared brings you back to reality. It’s meant to remind us all to appreciate who we are individually and never take this life for granted.
  3.  (Electric Wires)-Is about how we feel alone at times but we will find the people in our lives that understand who we are and what we’re about in a world where nobody knows anybody but themselves.  “That when you walk down the street there are millions of people with different lives and problems, but it is about doing what makes you happy and you are not the only person who will feel the way that you feel,” claimed Casey.

Fox The Cat has already began getting a strong following and they hope 2012 is the ‘Big Year’ for them to get their name known further and set up mini-tours out of state.  They hope that this year will give them a chance to do a lot of different musical collaborations while becoming further established and growing closer as a family.
