Review by Rachael Dowd

On a Saturday night, the venerable El Corazon, known for its gritty charm and intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for a night of high-energy performances from Belmont and Can’t Swim that left fans exhilarated.

Known for their technical proficiency and innovative approach to pop-punk, Belmont did not disappoint. They launched into their set with “SSX Trickmont” immediately demonstrating their knack for intricate guitar work and infectious melodies.

Belmont’s set was a whirlwind of energy, with standout tracks like “Pushing Daisies” and “By My Side” highlighting their ability to blend catchy hooks with complex musical arrangements. Frontman Taz Johnson‘s vocals were on point, delivering both the aggression and vulnerability that characterize Belmont’s sound. The band’s chemistry was evident, each member contributing to a performance that was as tight as it was energetic.

The pinnacle of their set came with “Overstepping,” a track that saw the entire venue erupt into a frenzy. Fans crowd-surfed and chanted along, the connection between the band and the audience reaching its zenith. Belmont’s set was a testament to their growing reputation as one of the most exciting acts in modern punk.

The night continued on with Can’t Swim, a band whose raw, emotive sound bridges the gap between punk, emo and post-hardcore. From the moment they took the stage, the energy in El Corazon was electric. Opening with “sometimes you meet the right people at the wrong time,” the band immediately commanded attention with their tight musicianship and Chris LoPorto‘s impassioned vocals. The crowd, a mix of dedicated fans and curious newcomers, was instantly hooked.

Tracks like “My Queen” and “Prick” showcased Can’t Swim’s ability to blend introspective lyrics with aggressive instrumentals, creating a sound that is both cathartic and invigorating. The band’s dynamic stage presence was a highlight; LoPorto’s interaction with the audience, combined with the relentless drive of the rhythm section, kept the energy levels high throughout their set. The crowd responded with enthusiasm, moshing and singing along, creating a sense of camaraderie that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of punk rock.

Belmont and Can’t Swim delivered performances that were both memorable and impactful. They reminded us of the enduring power of the music scene to unite, energize, and provide an outlet for emotional expression. For those in attendance, it was a night that reaffirmed their love for the genre and the vibrant community that surrounds it.
