Explosively soulful, R&B fused duo Vector_XING. Blending provoking beats and meshing the vocal styles of The Weeknd and Frank Ocean, Vector_XING may just earn himself a slot as one of the hottest rising pop-soul acts this year. Recently, Cameron and Stevan sat down with us to talk about their rising music career. You can check out their single, “Wild Child”  below.

How did you get your start in music?

Cameron: I have always been fascinated by music because it makes me feel so deeply… I remember sitting in the car on the way to school listening intently to whatever came out of the radio. Music, particularly in song-form, has always cut straight to my core. It has a spiritual effect on me . As a highly curious person, I wanted to know why this was the case – why did certain chord progressions color the world a shade of blue? How do the lyrics of “Mr Tambourine Man” take on a new dimension every time I listen? So around age 11, I picked up a guitar and started investigating how these songs were put together… I deconstructed them in my own haphazard way, and then slowly began putting the pieces back together to create my own songs. It’s funny because I was a terrible, terrible piano student as a child but once I started to self-teach what interested me me, I began to develop as a songwriter. Ultimately, to affect others the same way that certain music affects me, is my aspiration. Fun fact – my first song-writing partner was actually Andrew Davie of Bears Den.

Stevan: I think for some people music is just in their blood from when they are first born. Some people are just more in tune with the rhythms and melodies of life from the get go. I think that was the case for me. There was never really a moment that I got into music. Nor is there a separation between me and the music that I make or the music that I listen to. My earliest memories are of me listening to my Dad’s funk records on a Saturday while he read the paper and drank his coffee. My talent was always in singing though, so that how I learned to express myself musically. I’ve always sang in choirs, musicals, singing groups.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

We are pretty new to this whole thing, but I’d say finishing our first and seeing it thru to completion; from writing the first words down on paper to seeing it mixed and mastered. Those are the moments I live for. I live for the music and the creation.

Why should people listen to you? What makes you different?

There’s no reason someone should listen to us. I hope someone listens to our songs because they bring something positive into their lives. Whether the lyrics strike a chord and help them through a tough time or the melody resonates and they find themselves grooving in the car. Making music is as much about the giving of yourself in an intimate and specific way, as it is about anything else. What makes us different – absolutely everything. No music can be alike. Cameron and I were brought together to make music that is unique to our combination. As long we stay true to ourselves I feel like we have a lot to offer the world.
