Five Albums That Sound Better On Vinyl
Words and Picks by Haley Black

There is something about playing vinyls that makes listening to music so authentic. In my opinion, it is the next best way to enjoy music besides witnessing it live. Thankfully the meteorite that is modern technology has not caused vinyls and record players to become extinct. To the previous generation’s surprise, they have actually been making a bit of a comeback. (Cassette tapes and typewriters weren’t so lucky.) Sure, downloading music straight from your computer to your iPod is convenient, but let’s be honest, the hunt for the perfect record to add to your collection is way more exhilarating. These are just a few must-have vinyls that I personally think everybody should own.

The Postal Service – Give Up
The calm indie pop group coupled with a vinyl record is pure perfection. Although the tenth anniversary deluxe edition of Give Up, is being re-released soon, the original has just as much to offer despite not including the new bonus tracks. The B side record contains a pleasant surprise with a version of “Such Great Heights” recorded  by Iron & Wine, which very well may be one of the most outstanding covers I have ever heard. There is also an acoustic rendition of “We Will Become Silhouettes“ performed by The Shins.

Iron & Wine – Our Endless Numbered Days
The hushed vocals and smooth folk-style that this band acquires is nothing short of beautiful. This album is the perfect background music for cuddling up under a blanket, reading a book and drinking a hot cup of tea. “Naked As We Came” and “Each Coming Night” are my personal favorites, and they both have the potential to lull you to sleep.

Bon Iver – Bon Iver
I’m sure that many people can agree that some albums were made purely for vinyl listening, and Bon Iver’s self-titled is definitely one of them. The unique style is tranquil and serene, making the ideal soundtrack for a quiet, relaxing night at home. Just close your eyes and let the calm and collected symphony consume you.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
The 10 person band is incredibly talented and has a very unique indie sound that is very intriguing. More instruments than just the basic guitar, bass, and drums are incorporated in the music, which provides for well rounded and engaging compositions. The album’s vibe is extremely upbeat, and not to mention fun. Both “40 Day Dream” and “Janglin” are must listen tracks.

The Lumineers – The Lumineers
For starters, The Lumineers are a Denver based band which is one of many reasons that makes me extremely proud to call Colorado home. (We actually have some pretty cool bands from here – just throwing that out there.) Something about this album just blows me away. The lyrics, the soft folk style instrumentals, everything. There is no autotune, synthesizers, or anything to distract from the raw talent that this band obtains, and that is why this album is pure perfection.
