Five Albums For A Long Night Alone
Album Picks & Words by Will Howard

As a broke college student I spend a lot of nights up into the early hours of the morning alone, thinking. I think about my world and all the relationships I screwed up, and the opportunities I missed out on. I just sit there and think. These five records are what I listen to, to make all those depressing sad feelings go away. They make me feel like I’m not alone in the world, and that no matter how bad I screw up, or how many nights I sit there alone, that somehow someway things just aren’t so bad. That there are people around my age sitting on there porch writing songs about these nights. These are the records that inspired me to write a project of my own, and to pursue music as a career. They are deeply personal to me and I hope that you can find the same connection I have found in both life, and the music.

Ghost Thrower – Ten Songs
This record has gotten me through so many long sleepless nights. Ghost Thrower is the perfect band to spend a long unhappy night alone, especially after a break up. Warning: Do not listen to this record if you are happy, it will make you hate love, relationships, and the MBTA.

Joyce Manor – Joyce Manor
Joyce Manor takes a more old school, honest approach to their music. With a set of songs shorter than most pop songs, Joyce Manor writes incredible music. The song “Leather Jacket” gets me through the nights when I wish things were still like they were back in high school, and then remember why things are so much better now.

Aviator – I’m Not The Lonely One
These dudes are just plain rad! I’m not the lonely one is that one record I can always turn to no matter how good or bad things are. When TJ Copello shouts out “these sad songs I sing are not a cry for help. I see you’ve noticed all these worries placed upon this shelf”, I feel so connected it is undeniable. That moment is instantly better, and everything suddenly fades away.

Native Wildlife – Blackwood
So these dudes are some the most personal, talented and rocking dudes. Blackwood is a eleven minute two track record with enough feedback, cracking drum beats, and screaming to make any man feel better about life. In their own words, “ We mark this house as a home of faith and passion”.

Barrow – Being Without
Barrow are this incredible hardcore band from North Carolina striving for excellence. The four piece is able to create more expansive enticing and philosophical audio in a debut record than any human could ever dream of doing. Being Without is the emotional and philosophical ramblings that makes being alone feel so much less wrong.

  1. yooooo this is a pretty good list! you should check out giant orange by cheap girls, on the impossible past by the menzingers, not like this by iron chic, colourmeinkindness by basement, and empty days & sleepless nights by defeater.
