Blink 182 – Dogs Eating Dogs
Review by Haley Black
Happy Holidays from Blink 182! What’s a better present than new music from one of your favorite bands? Or your favorite band releasing a Christmas song? I bet a lot of people would have never thought of hearing a Christmas related song out of this band. “Boxing Day” is nothing short of incredible with the low-key acoustic guitar and bells chiming in the background. The song is upbeat aside from the slightly sorrowful lyrics recounting a breakup the day after Christmas.
The title track, “Dogs Eating Dogs” sounds like the classic Blink 182 that so many people have fallen in love with over the course of their impressive career. Lyrically and instrumentally, the song is flawless. It’s simply the trio doing what they do best, captivating fans old and new, one verse at a time.
“Disaster” comprises echoing guitar effects as DeLong chants, “I’m scared of the dark my friends.” It’s one of those songs that makes you want to put in your headphones and completely absorb it.
A hint of teenage angst and nostalgia is heard in “When I Was Young” when DeLonge belts out, “It’s the worst damn day of my life. I made a mess today, I’m alright.” The lyrics are attentive and the song is highly relatable, which is the greatest gift music can give a person.
“Pretty Little Girl” included a pleasant surprise, featuring rapper, Yelawolf on the track. The song would have been amazing with or without the verse, but the collaboration was compelling. Props to Blink 182 for trying something new and stepping outside of their comfort zone.
Blink 182 is such an iconic band of the 21st Century. So many bands look up to them and are influenced by their cleverness. They are extremely lucky to be one of those few bands that don’t have the capability of getting old. They also never disappoint, and if they do it is a rare occasion. With each new song or record, the band continues to raise the bar, giving fans as well as themselves high expectations. Somehow, they manage to hit the ball out of the park every time.
Between their latest album release, Neighborhoods, and the Dogs Eating Dogs EP, it’s almost like the painfully long hiatus never occurred. As individuals, Hoppus, DeLonge, and Barker are insanely talented, but put them together and pure magic happens. Each of their side projects are great, but it would be a sin for these guys not to make music together.
