William Beckett- Winds Will Change EP
Album Review by Jenn Stookey

This past year for William Beckett has been nonstop. From a split with his band of almost 10 years, announcing he would continue to make music solo, to already putting out a very successful first solo EP, Walk The Talk. William Beckett has most definitely made a name for himself in this world, and I am proud to say that I feel he has reached the point of being known by his own name and not by “the lead singer of The Academy Is”. His new four-track EP, Winds Will Change, is a short collection of music that is orchestrated quite wonderfully, and will continue to put Beckett on the rise as a solo artist.

“Great Night” was the perfect choice for an opener. No doubt this song will be replayed through your head until you can somehow figure a way to get it unstuck. It is a song with a steady beat that just screams “I’m sitting with my friends at a bar at closing time and we’re all going to belt out the lyrics together as we sway”. This is just an overall good feel jam.

“Warriors” is a powerful song, as far as the instrumentals go. Even though this song is not the best out of this bunch, it is still a strong song.

“Scarlett (Tokyo)” stands out from the rest on the album and is really well balanced. The different percussion instruments don’t stray your thoughts away from it as a whole. Everything seems to have it’s own place and nothing seems out of the ordinary, however, this song is so different from the others on the album. It is faster paced with a hint of an electro feel in the background during the chorus that just feels right with the lyrics “One last starrise before I go”. This song will not disappoint.

“Dig A Hole” is the lucky song that rounds up this 14 minute EP. The verses of this song have very eerie harmonies. It goes quite well with the lyrics, as they talk about waiting for something to happen. As the chorus takes its place, the sound changes into something much smoother, and the lyrics once again flow right with it, which is a sense of clarity, “There between the wind and clouds, I finally see, I found out […] How impossible it seems, it’s possible to me”. Those lyrics are the perfect ending to this music collection.

Winds Will Change was more than I had anticipated. It truly does exert a great combination of emotions. William Beckett has never disappointed, and I can’t wait to see how far he will go if he continues to produce as strong of music as he has been.
