When We Don’t Exist – Like Moths to Flames

Like Moths To Flames is a metal hardcore band hailing from Columbus, Ohio. They recently released their first full-length album on November 8, 2011 through Rise Records. Like Moths to Flames isn’t your typical hardcore band, they have distinct sounds that once you hear a few cords you’ll know exactly who it is. Throughout the whole entire album they have harmonizing guitars, intricate drum work, gut wrenching screams and boisterous bass parts. Each and every song has it’s own unique touch to it and none of the songs sound the same. The lyrics are very dark, just like the music, but in a good way.
The 11-track album has ingenious lyrics. What I mean by that is that each song has a great meaning and to me personally, the lyrics pretty much tell a story about my life. Chris Roetter (vocals) is a lyrical genius and you can tell that he put so much thought and effort into these songs to make them have so much meaning. You can tell that each song has a taste of bitterness towards someone or something. I can sense that this CD implies struggles people have gone through whether it was a relationship gone badly, a friendship that has gone astray or mistakes that have been made in the past.
The rhythms of the guitars, bass and drums used are incredible. Not only do they have distinct rhythms they have a distinct sound, which comes from their chosen chords. The sound they chose suits them so well and it also doesn’t sound like another band. I personally feel that if they had a different style it wouldn’t work for them as well as this particular style does. I would like to give mad props to Aaron Evans, Zach Huston, Eli Ford and Lance Greenfield for creating incredible music to go along with Chris Roetter’s intense lyrics.
All in all, We Don’t Exist by Like Moths to Flames has to be one of the best albums my ears have ever heard. Everything about it is just perfect and if you’re in need of new music to check out I highly recommend checking out Like Moths to Flames. They’ll be out on the road with D.R.U.G.S, Hit the Lights and Sparks the rescue starting January 19th and running through February 25th, I suggest you head out to that show if you get the chance!
